Description |
This is a basic course in the physics of music and sound, taught on-line, and intended for students majoring in topics other than the sciences or mathematics (non-science/math majors). The objective of this course is to give the student an understanding of the basic physical principles underlying sound and music. It provides a demonstration of how physics works addressing a medium with which we are all familiar (sound and music). The approach assumes no knowledge of mathematics beyond simple arithmetic and little or no physics background. The course is taught through the use of experiments applying numerous sound examples and sound synthesis and analysis computer programs, including spectrographic analysis. This provides an understanding of the physics involved in empirical and graphical terms. An important objective is to make the student familiar with sound analysis software and applies programs of both synthesis and analysis. The material in this course will be directly applicable for those majoring in music (performance or education), communications disorders/speech pathology, or languages. For all students, it offers an insight into science and - depending on the classification of the class at your school - a science elective. The topics in the course (subject to change) are: 1. Properties of Sound Waves - basic concepts and terminology (experiment with a candle flame) 2. Synthesis - combination of wave shapes 3. Analysis - wave forms 4. Analysis - spectra 5. Timbre and Loudness 6. Resonance and Resolution 7. Voice and Violin - vowel formation, vibrato, vocal formant and missing fundamental 8. Percussion - predominance of overtones 9. Bio-feedback for speech therapy and music education |
